Fashion Month Continues : Recap

As fashion month continues, I wanted to give you a recount from the rest of my crazy, hectic, glamorous NY Fashion Week!

In case you’ve noticed I haven’t been posting every week like I have in the past, that is because as we grow our new business Chic Sketch, there is a lot more to do and so many exciting things going on. I am also in the midst of working on a very large and EXCITING project that I can’t reveal yet but when I do – it’s going to be BIG and amazing!  I can’t wait to share it with you!!!!

Saturday
As I left off with you last post, I was about to head to the Fashion Show Noon by Noor. When I arrived I discovered I was sitting front row (for both shows I attended) at the new venue Skylight at Moynihan Station. This was so exciting and pretty much a dream come true to sketch front row for these incredible designers!

Tuesday and Wednesday
Next up was the Bene Rialto Bloggers lounge where I got to meet some amazing bloggers and live sketch all of them, while my sketches were being projected onto a huge white wall

Bene Rialto is where I started live sketching only less than a year ago and where my most special 7 foot tall sketch is being permanently displayed on their store front window!  Caryn Neary and her team are incredible there and I am so honored to be a part of their events!

Thursday
Next up my husband Jordan and I attended the Macy’s fashion show, which was their “Biggest Fashion Show Ever” taped to air on E! Entertainment on Sept. 23 at 8 p.m and showcased at Madison Square Garden with co-hosts Giuliana Rancic and Brad Goreski from the show “Fashion Police”. The Fashion Industry’s brightest stars made appearances. Diane Von Furstenburg, CFDA president and Fashion Designer by her own namesake, made a welcome appearance to kick off the fashion show. Tommy Hilfiger and Heidi Klum bowed at each of their line’s runway segment and other Macy’s collections like Sean Jean, Ryan Seacrest Distinction, Jessica Simpson, Thalia Sodi, INC, Hello Kitty, Impulse and Samgsung S2 wearable fashion (watches) showed their new Fall 2015 collections. The looks were available on sale for us fashion show guests AT THE EXACT moment they graced the runway on macys.com/frontrow.

Friday and Saturday
Last but not least of our second half of fashion week was a two-day event at Sephora Brooklyn and Queens. I had live-sketched at the Sephora Times Square location as a collaboration with Allure Magazine and Lancome a month or so ago and they had us back for some great events for Sephora Collection.  I LOVE working with Sephora and sketching their guests because all the Sephora girls are such risk takers and fashionistas with their makeup and it’s so fun to draw different makeup looks when I’m not drawing fashion looks.

Summer Love Adventure

At this point in the summer,

you probably have plans to get away – and if you don’t – then you want to! We haven’t had that many great summer days in NY and this gloomy 75 degree weather in July is just not cutting it for me!

Dreaming of Paris
Fortunately enough it’s my favorite time of year – the Paris Couture Shows.
If you have been following my blog you know that I drool over these runway shows. It’s when fashions’ best and brightest show their most elite of collections. From intricate details taking hundreds of hours to the most eccentric pieces of art that are best suited for a museum floor; Paris Haute Couture is the shiznit.

If for some reason you are not fortunate enough to BE in Paris right now (ahem, that’s me!) I have been following vicariously through those fortunate few fashion insiders this week on their snapchat, of which I am now completely obsessed. (follow me @ EmilyBrickel on snapchat) and of course devouring the runways shows via Style.com.

Here I did some quick freehand fashion sketches of a few of my favorite pieces from Chanel and Alexandre Vauthier. Trust me I wanted to draw all night.

However, if you are not dreaming of Paris Couture like I am, maybe somewhere a bit more beachy is your style?

Beachy Keen
Swim week is up ahead, starting next week in Miami and ending in LA.
We are SOOOOO thrilled to announce that we (Chic Sketch) will be there live for LA Swim. I will be sketching all day so be sure to follow us @ ChicSketch on snapchat on July 23rd and my EmilyBrickel account for our week in LA starting the 19th as your behind the scenes view into our trip!

We have some exciting things on the horizon to make sure to also follow our instagram @ChicSketch and @EmilyBrickel.

Staycation Adventure 
Lastly, if you are not going anywhere anytime soon, I highly recommend you follow my new Summer Love Adventure. What this is, is a highly personal, extremely fun way to create your own adventure wherever you are. I admit I was feeling a bit down due to this less than ideal weather. Some days its 85 degrees and I’m swamped in the office, other days its 72 degrees on a Saturday and all I want to do is feel the summer heat. What gives?

I have made a personal commitment (and I am twisting my husband’s arm to comply with this fun plan) to create my own fate this summer.
It’s almost the middle of JULY people…. I hate to break it to you but that means we have about a month and a half left of summer before the craziness of September begins. Here’s my plan:

  1. Daily walks outside – (especially when it’s warm out). For me, I am committing to taking a walk outside before the sun goes down if it’s a nice day out. I don’t care how busy my day is, I’m committing to taking a lunch break or just an anytime break to enjoy the sunshine.

 

  1. Meditate – I want to get back to meditating, it really helps me relax, connect and de-stress. Summer should be relaxing and since I don’t have a relaxing few months ahead (we are prepping for big things!) I will bring the relaxation to me!

 

  1. Baths – Baths are the ultimate luxury for me. If I have the opportunity to take a nice long bath, I literally emerge with a new perspective on life. Adding lavender bath salts, lotions and potions (or bubbles) is the ultimate way to take good care of yourself and to look and feel beautiful inside and out.  Your skin will glow and you will be so much happier – which makes you look more beautiful too! Baths give me the time to focus on the sound of the water filling up, or the silence that I rarely get (especially since we are all so digitally connected 24/7) and that disconnection is another form of meditation for me.  I can get in tune with my intuition so well this way and arrive at solutions to questions I have been pondering, even come up with brand new ideas for just about anything!

 

  1. Working out – I am a makeup and heels type of girl, don’t get me wrong. I wouldn’t be caught dead at a gym without a shower and makeup first (don’t remind me of how counter-intuitive that is please). It takes me too long to get ready for the gym, go there, work out, come home, and get ready again for the day. Total time suck for me. If that was the case I would rarely work out! ALAS, I reintroduce you to the workout DVD. No shower, no makeup required to work out in your living room with no one judging you – maybe besides my husband making fun of me!  This allows me to work out between 3-7 days a week depending on my circumstances like travel and how I’m feeling.  Here are a few of the DVD’s I have been sweating to for the last few years in order: Brazilian Butt Lift (this works and I used to train with Leandro in Equinox when I had my fancy corporate membership ages ago), Turbo Jam (fun but kinda old school), and 21 Day Fix (this has gotten me in the best shape ever. I have been doing its since last summer and have repeated the 21 day program multiple times for the last year, but some weeks not every day.) As all workouts create a plateau effect if you do it long enough, so its imperative to switch it up. I just ordered Tone It Up Beach Babe 2 (1 seemed not as fun and I plan on getting 3 once I get sick of 2).  I will let you know how that goes! Life is short – have a fun workout, a workout you get up and get excited to do!

 

  1. Create your own add ons! Make this as fun and adventurous as possible. Decide on at least one other thing you can do to make an adventure out of your every day life this summer. Take a bike trip, have picnic, get crafty with some summer DIY projects or lay on the grass and watch the clouds go by. Do something totally fun and inspiring that lets you to enjoy the summer, no matter what your 9-5 – or 9-9 looks like!  Every one is allowed to take a 30 minute break at the least, no excuses you! Work will still be there when you get back. Summer time is limited!

Try one of these or anything that floats your boat. Just remember do something that you look forward to.

On that note, I think I blabbed enough.

And……. We made it! Fashion Week Recap

And……. We made it! 

The Chic Sketch Launch and Fashion week has come and gone and it was SUCH an amazing experience! I was asked to be one of the two guest Illustrators for The Style Line this season and what a ride it was! Getting to go backstage to all the shows, a back-to-back runway show schedule every day, rubbing elbows with top models, designers, makeup artists and hairstylists was super exciting and very cool.

Lily Qian (my fellow illustrator) and I were creating quick rough sketches to draw what we saw, as if we were visual journalists, capturing the beauty, the hair looks and of course, the FASHION!  I loved that we both had such different styles. What a privilege it was to be the first of the first eyeballs to see the collections and inspirations of these designers, before they even walk down the runway! It was truly one of my dreams come true!

I was also asked to live illustrate at two of the top shows for Chic Sketch at Nicole Miller and Noon By Noor. Such an amazing experience! The response that Chic Sketch is getting is incredible and we are so grateful for all those involved and all of you who have downloaded and LOVE the app!  You can download it here (link)

SO here I am, thankfully able to recoup today from the most insanely hectic week (that felt like a month, with all the planning involved!), collect my thoughts and rest my drawing arm. I must have drawn for like 40 hours straight this week and that is a lot! I am insanely grateful for the opportunities I’ve been presented with and all the opportunities and blessings that I know are to come.

In the eye of the storm, nothing else matters but getting the looks down, creating the art, being inspired and connecting with the fashion and beauty. It’s pretty cool, and that’s what I live for.

Custom making your dreams!

You have NO idea how excited I am!!!!
I am practically bouncing off my chair and I can’t contain myself.
I just went to meet with my sample makers today to check on my wedding dress and it is looking AMAZZINGGGGGGG. Dreams come to life, paper drawings coming to fruition. It is the thing I LIVE for – being a fashion designer – and I am so excited that I get to be blessed enough to go through this process again, this time with MY wedding dress.  It is even more spectacular then I could imagine and I am SO EXCITED!!!

I feel so free.  That’s what happens when you feel like your dreams are unfolding just the way they are supposed to be. It’s pretty crazy and it feels great.  You no longer have to push, you just show up.

The only way I can describe it is the difference between waiting for happiness and feeling like “you will just be happy ONCE this happens, WHEN xyz, AFTER you get this and that in order, ONCE you make the money, WHEN you have the man, AFTER you have that purse, etc…..”

…and feeling like “everything is happening exactly as it is supposed to and I am so extremely happy and grateful to be right here right now, and I trust the process. I know that I am shooting for the stars and I know I’ll get there and right now I’m enjoying every step of the journey.”

My mentor says it best “Those who are certain of the outcome can afford to wait, and wait without anxiety.” – ACIM.

Well I’ve been waiting!

If there is something you are waiting for that you know in your heart of hearts is your deepest desire : TRUST that the Universe will conspire to move mountains to make your dream happen.  Not because it is magic, but because it’s your JOB to share your gift with the world – and if you are NOT sharing your gift with the world, then you are doing it and everyone around you a MAJOR disservice!!!!

“Live your dream in your heart and let the Universe move everything to bring your dream to you. Feel your dream, feel the presence of the Universe inside you, KNOW that the Universe is guiding you, and then allow the Universe to realize your dream!” – The Secret.

I know this may sound crazy if you don’t already believe what I’m saying but try it for yourself.
Something like this always reminds me of what my mom used to tell me when I was younger and wishing my dream would come true (wishing for this my whole life)….  She said “All overnight successes are 10 years in the making”.

And it’s true. Not that by any means I have achieved all of my dreams as of today but I have achieved so much and I KNOW that my lifelong dream of being a fashion designer is something that I am living now, even if it’s on the small scale – that means the world to me. And one day I know that I will live it on the large scale, because that is what I have always seen for myself.

When the road was covered in an uncertain fog and I could no longer see 5 feet in front of me, it was scary, and depressing and disheartening.
Walking through the uncertain fog was even scarier, continuing to take baby steps even though I had lost my way was extremely hard and I felt like giving up, turning around and curling into a cocoon so many days BUT, the fog has lifted my dears. I can see my dream again and even though I don’t know where the road will take me, I know that from past experience if you hold tight to your dreams and never let go, the fog will pass and you too will be on your way – slowly but surely to living a life beyond your wildest dreams.  It can happen. All you need is faith.

Here is a sneak peak of me draping my wedding gown, the first major milestone in the process of designing and making my dress – one of the most EXCITING things in my life to date.   I am so excited, and I’m so excited for YOU to be with you on your journey to living a life of your dreams!

Make Time Your B*tch

It feels like it should be Friday and it’s only Wednesday (as I write this). Jordan and I have been super busy the last few weeks. We were away for Labor Day weekend wedding planning and we got back last Tuesday evening. We hit the ground running with a short work week, Fashion Week streaming, a Friday wedding, a Saturday pop-up in store event for my illustrations, another wedding Saturday, working in the office Sunday to catch up, 2 news interviews for Jordan on Monday about the iPhone 6 release, another news interview for Jordan Tuesday, a fashion show, a dinner with a long lost friend, a fashion show after party (that I could not muster up the energy to attend) and now a baseball game at Yankee stadium where we got the opportunity to go on field as one of Jordan’s client’s guests.

It’s been crazy and I have managed to get a ton of work done on the go, and I’m still going strong.  I’m writing this as we speak while watching the Yankee game from our seats.

It’s all about the hustle. It’s all about the multitasking. And let me tell you what else it’s all about… It’s all about these game-changing habits to push though.

Let me guide you through your most hectic days.

1) Get comfy with your AM routine.
Schedule in plenty of time to stick to your morning routine. Keep the rituals you normally do like your workout, your time on the computer to read your news or blogs, time to feed the dog, make breakfast, get ready, clean up, etc. Skipping anything you normally do on an extra busy day will likely give you a kick-start of frustration and frazzlement (yes I created that word) before you even leave the house.

2) Wake up 30 minutes earlier than you really need to.
Not that you want to cut out any last minutes of beauty sleep you can get, but it’s worth it when you have some extra leisure time to plan out your day.  Use that time to slow down, take a longer shower, prep for a meeting or just get out early to grab a much-deserved Starbucks. Having that extra time on a hectic day will make you feel even more confident and ready to tackle the day ahead.

3) Catch some ZZZ’s
Nothing preps you better and gets you through the day like enough sleep. Numerous studies have shown how effective your brain lymphatic system is at literally “draining” out the stress toxins from your body. When you don’t get enough sleep you feel the difference.

4) Beautify with my fav products.
Kick up your beauty routine to fight visible sign of stress. I love Glamglow super mud clearing treatment here . Jack Black face buff here. It’s for men but I got a sample from Sephora and LOVEEED it, it scrubs dead skin cells and makes you feel awake with Vit C and menthol. I also love Sabon Facial Moisture Lotion in Dessert Flower here and my newest obsession is Vichy Life Serum here. This last one is perfect for behavioral signs of aging like lifestyle factors (city living, stress, UV rays, and lack of sleep. Time stands no chance when your skin looks like time stood still.


5) Make time your b*tch
Multitask the crap out of your day.
Any time in a car, waiting in line, or doing something that does not require your full attention: get some extra emails out, write your blog or any content/ documents etc. in your notes section of your smart phone and email it to yourself later. When home you can just copy and paste it into a word document and you’re good to go. Make lists, get ready for new clients, and basically check off your to do list. Anything is possible, from anywhere with the power of smart phones. Take advantage and make time work for you.

6) Listen to your body
Although I really wanted to go to the fashion show after party last night, I skipped it because my body was telling me to slow down. The dinner ran late, I had tons of work to catch up on and it just didn’t feel like I could handle another event that day with out possibly getting sick. Running my own business- when I sleep, my company sleeps, when I’m sick, my company is basically closed. I have learned to take care of my body so well that I don’t let that happen. So…. same goes for you. Trust your body and what it’s saying. If it’s tired, sleep; depleted, fuel it and so on.

7) Time is just an illusion.
When you think you don’t have time – you don’t. When you make time, you will always have it. Sound confusing? Read up on it Eckhart Tolle. He says : “Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.”  Time is NOW. Seize the day and make the most of every second. Create the time that you need and it will be there. Check out his book for a more detailed explanation here.

Get Connected

To break it all down – life is about connection and that means consistently connecting to what we love.

When we open up to this basic yet underrated foundation of ensuring that our day includes things that bring us joy and light us up, all of our life will be enhanced (especially the not so fun times).

Get connected to the things you love, on a daily basis, no matter what.
This means having a daily ritual – one that you can call on to ground you and start your day.

Simple things like your morning coffee to your workout are sure-fire ways to connect to things that give you peace and happiness.

On a larger scale, it’s about connecting to your true passions, your purpose and the people you love.

Take a moment to redefine the rituals you blindly go through every day to see how you can create a rejuvenating retreat starting from the moment you get out of bed. Focus on the things you have always wanted to accomplish and get connected to that. Write it down and visualize how you want it to go.

The dreams you were given were created uniquely and especially for YOU because you have the tools innately to achieve them. 

Never doubt your dreams or your intuition. Whenever I have done so it lead to so much agony and internal conflict it is crazy – crazy and beyond unnecessary.  Give in to the greater purpose of your life and don’t be afraid – you were BORN to do this!

Today marks the start of Spring Summer 2015 Fashion Week in Lincoln Center and I am beyond excited to be getting back into my dream of being a fashion designer and really connecting to all of my passions.

I can’t wait to see all the new looks the designers showing this season have dreamed up. Each season it serves as fresh inspiration for me to see the magic of the runway and dreams come to life…..

Think Outside the Lines

Think about what you’ve been told, and what you’ve learned along the way. Think about all the rules you live by…. Now forget all of that.

Think about the time you were really young and you had not a care in the world, when you were free of self-judgment and free of feeling judged by anyone else. How did you act and what did you think?

What would you do if you were not afraid? If you could be 100% yourself all the time without being judged, being made fun of or feeling less than.

What would you wear? What would you say? What would you do?
Would it be the same as you act now or would it be completely different?

In order to bring our best to this life, we need to be uniquely ourselves – and not a carbon copy of anyone else.  It’s time to break out of your shell and dance on the shadow of your former self.

Go back to that time when you were young and you could do no wrong.

Life is short and we only have THIS MOMENT to be the change you want to see. We only have this moment to be living our dreams.  Start now.

Color outside the lines. Get messy, experiment, take chances, be free, consult your inner guru, judge with your gut, move with your heart, speak with your soul.

Live like theirs no tomorrow. Operate from a place of yes.

What if there were no boundaries…. What are you waiting for?

Harness the inspiration from within

It’s that time again. Fashion Week is upon us and to me – it’s the stuff that dreams are made of.   I don’t know what it is about fashion but it literally never stops giving me chills when I see a runway show, details of a garment up close or another fellow fashion designer’s illustrations.  What is it that gives you chills?

To me, there is magic in the creation of each piece of apparel and there is an energy that I can really feel when I see any of the “behind the scenes”, even before I created my first collection or runway show.

I love seeing the sneak peeks of any of the designers that I admire so much and to see what goes into the final creation. Today I want to share some with you and help you harness a little inspiration of your own.

Even though this season I am not showing my own collection, I know that fire burns within me and it is what I am meant to do.  If “Plan A” doesn’t work, the alphabet has 25 more letters. I know there are so many of you who have this burning desire of a dream and I’m telling you never to stop.

Believe in your dreams and do what makes your soul SHINE!

“Dream big and dare to fail.”  – Norman Vaughan.

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you have imagined.” – Henry David Thoreau.

Just start, and don’t stop.

If you are thinking, wait its not that simple – then read on because it really is.  It is so simple, yet not so easy.  Follow along and you too will have the path to living your dreams! It takes time, perseverance, blood, sweat and tears but if you want it bad enough, it will be yours.

  1. Be Specific. Know exactly what it is that you want to do and write it down.

 

  1. Believe and trust wholeheartedly.  If you don’t believe it fully, stop right here and start to trust. The act of believing in something comes from within and the best way to get there is really to trust your inner voice, your intuition.  To sit back and to listen to what it is telling you.

 

  1. Create goals.  Now you need to believe that you not only can do it, but that you WILL do it.  Create goals, create a plan and commit.

 

  1. Take action NOW.  There is no time like the present. You can do it, so as the ancient greek goddess Nike said “JUST DO IT”.  *That was a joke. More like, as the company named after the greek goddess says!

 

  1. Review your progress. You set your goals, now keep track of them and hold yourself accountable.

 

  1. See it. Visualize it and decide exactly how it will look in your head.

 

  1. Have a support system. Tell your friends and family what you want to do. Read The Secret, and other books on accomplishing great things in life. This is your support system, the reinforcement that you too can live your dreams.

Hope that inspired you and believe me, it is a long and windy road. A path less traveled.  A path in which obstacles will be in your way and you will have to dig up the weeds, climb up the pathless hills and pave your own way.  But, as you look back on the path you chose, the path less traveled, know that you have become a trailblazer, with battle wounds to tell the tale.

Something Bigger…

I just read a really interesting article by Mastin Kipp of The Daily Love titled “Time for a 2012 check in – How are you doing with those dreams?”   It’s so true for me right now and maybe for you too.

He reminds me that, and I quote “THIS AIN’T NO DRESS REHEARSAL!”, and he’s right.

September always feels like a new school year to me, no matter how many years it’s been since I graduated college.   New York is getting back to business from the summer, so It’s the perfect time to get back to you. Get back into your goals and nurturing your dreams.

Mastin says “Your dreams, your goals – the things your heart desires – all these things are PRESENT MOMENT DESIRES! If you aren’t taking action towards them DAILY – then you aren’t going to make them happen.”

I guess that’s kind of a wakeup call, taking daily right actions towards our deepest most ingrained dreams in order to make progress. We forget that there are seven days in the week – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Someday is not one of them.

And these days are packed full of stuff to do! But we must not let them get away.  It all begins with daily right actions.

A big theme for me this month is Fashion Week and Fashion’s Night Out.  All of the work we do as designers culminates into that one show, the one night of the year when everyone comes out of the woodwork to make something big happen.  In this case, to help the global economy and donate to charities, good causes and independent designers.

It is one of the most exhilarating things I’ve ever felt, standing stage Left peering through the curtains at my runway show about to come alive.  That was years ago, and I am consumed every day to make that happen again. I love this quote “Never give up on something you can’t go a day without thinking about.”  Now, not that I ever gave up, or ever would – but sometimes the bigger picture gets away from you.  It’s in remembering that one daily right action adds up to 365 steps a year that you are taking to feed your soul’s purpose.

Just start somewhere. Test it. No task is too big when approached from a mindset like this, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one single step.” Lau Tzu

Be easy on yourself and acknowledge the steps you have taken.  Recognize the effort and the mindshare you have put forth to get to the part right before you even take the first step.  Also acknowledge WHY you have NOT taken any steps yet, what fears or emotions are you holding on to about starting this? Work on that then.  The marathon runner first had to be emotionally committed to going for that morning run, time and time again – before they even put their sneakers on.

If you feel that there is something bigger that you are meant to do with your life, break it out into manageable steps and do it.

Jump right in.

The biggest victories I’ve ever had in my life were things I knew I had to do in my gut, and I didn’t even think too much about them because I knew if I analyzed it and waited – I probably would never have done it.

These are things for me like deciding to go to college at FIT, deciding to study abroad, deciding to go to London by myself, running for Miss New York, twice, and starting my first business – my fashion line.  Sometimes the time is just right for you to jump in, and if you listen – your gut will always tell you what to do. That’s why you have it.
