California Vibes: The IVY

This week’s illustration is inspired by scenes from our lunch at The Ivy in West Hollywood. I swear I have never seen a more gorgeous display of apples and oranges!

So this week my blog is a day delayed as I was helping my husband launch his new app PORTALBALL with Joe Girardi. It was a very exciting launch which included some early days and trips to Yankee Stadium for some private meetings in Joe’s office and making sure everything went smoothly for the launch day.  I’ve been finding myself super backed up in a bunch of work and feeling totally uninspired about how I am creating NEW work this week.  It seems to me this non-stop going, going, going drive is good while you’re in it, but it can definitely catch up to you.

If you are a creative like me, or even just taping into your feminine energy we need some time to reflect, rejuvenate and refresh. I stumbled upon this Marie TV blog when I was searching for some inspiration about how she is closing down her business for the next two weeks to let all of her employees have some downtime. She said that she did this for two weeks over the holidays and everyone came back so much more refreshed and inspired.  Taking two weeks off, a week or even a few days for me right now is a luxury that I don’t have (and I’m sure a lot of you don’t either) but what I will say is that everyone can take a full weekend off for sure. Typically, as an entrepreneur we tend to work a solid few hours on Sunday night but this weekend I feel like I really need a bit of a refresher.  Heck, maybe I’ll even take a lunch break outside today to get my juices going again.

Creating (and I am working on some really cool creative things right now) takes a lot of energy and to really give it your all it is important that you feed your soul.  Not to be cheesy but here is a quote that really brought me back to what my priorities are “If you’re always listening to the noise of the world it’s impossible to hear the whispers of your soul.” @MarieForleo

For me, as an artist and designer, I need that message from my intuition in order to create amazing things. It is super important I get back on the self nurturing program that I was on a few months ago. This includes, baths, meditation, time outside (especially while summer is still here!), exercise, listening to music and getting inspired.

I almost skipped my blog this week because I have so much other work to do, but writing and drawing for me are two of my favorite things to do and they really get my juices going again. It is an outlet that I can amp my creativity and get back in my zone.

Grow Towards the Sunshine – Real Beautiful

What part of your life do you just wish you could branch out and be your best self?

There is some dream you wish to achieve and some level you know you can ascend to but just haven’t gotten there yet.  Whether it be an out of this world aspiration of crazy heights that you keep to yourself as a deep dark secret, or just one step higher on the ladder of your journey that your loved ones know you are striving towards – know that you can do it!  Know that you are worthy of reaching your full potential and you are worth it RIGHT NOW, right as you are – even if you don’t believe me.

There are so many things in my life that I have huge dreams to accomplish and so many times I doubt myself thinking “Who am I to share my thoughts with the world, why does the world care about what I have to say? Does the world really need another artist, or another fashion designer?” I have had these very thoughts millions of times, some right when I was procrastinating making my next move, and some RIGHT AS I was writing a blog, drawing my art or designing an outfit.  But then, I get just one person telling me I helped them, one more person commissioning a custom illustration or getting the opportunity to be asked to create artwork for their book (Like Cindy’s new book REAL Beautiful that my art is featured in– click here to read more) and I realize that I am doing what I am supposed to be doing.  It’s a hard voice to stand up against. We all have this doubt and sometimes the voice asking those questions is louder than others.  I have learned in all of my years of constant self-discipline, self-growth, education and experience to quiet that voice inside and sometimes (but not all the time) I don’t even hear it any more.

I am here to say it’s ok to take the step further. It is MORE than ok to have everything you ever wanted, but to get it you must be willing to invest in yourself.

As Marianne Williams’ famous quote goes: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God / the Universe. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God /the Universe that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

That being said, Invest in yourself. It may be scary. Heck, its HELLA scary, but oh-so-worth it when you take the leap. You are investing in your future!

Whether it be investing time, money, experience, dedication, total commitment, or all of the above, dig deep and do it.

CHANGE the way you think about the things you deserve to have.  In order do the things you want in life you need to change the way you do things now.

Change is uncomfortable and scary and it involves facing a lot of fear and insecurity. When we are uncomfortable we think something is wrong so we pull back and stop moving ahead but in doing so we quit on ourselves….Mentally emotionally and physically – celebrate the discomfort of change.”  – Marie Forleo

The only way to serve the world in a massive, better and great way is to step out of your comfort zone and really take the leap.

Know that you are worth it. – trust in yourself and say a big YES to yourself and the universe for more good things to come your way.

By investing in yourself you are planting and watering the seeds of your abundant garden to grow. By sowing your crop you will elicit the change from being curled inside your shell, buried underground to busting through the walls, through all the dirt and reaching up towards the sunshine.  You are the seed.  Invest in yourself.

Buy that book that you know will help you in some way (like Cindy’s book), spend that hour in the morning exercising, take that course, get your business plan together, update your website and spend that extra little bit of time, money or energy on yourself.  You are the fountain.  Mend your cracks so you can over flow with abundance instead of leaking all of that energy.Hope that inspired you!

Endless Possibilities

Summer is here and with every infinity pool and every ocean comes the feeling of endless possibilities.

A clean slate for the taking, something about the water feels like all your cares will be washed away and you will emerge anew.

It’s a time to relax and a time to rejuvenate yourself from whatever is weighing you down.

When it comes to your dreams, the summer is also a great time to create a version of your endless possibilities.

Summer vacations leave room for a space between the day-to-day and your mind to wander to the “what if’s”.

Just like a shower or soak in the tub, it’s a state of meditation where your “anxiety voice” can calm down and your inner guide can tell you what to do.

It is in the meditation – either sitting in actual meditation for 5 minutes or any form of soaking in water – that solutions arise to scenarios where you hadn’t known what to do.

This can be applied to relationships, to your career or to any one of your next moves.

“Everything is figureoutable” as Marie Forleo says, and soaking in a meditation is the first step to getting there.  (The second step is Google!)

Take a breath.

Take the first step.

Whatever your intuition is telling you is the key to what is right for you right now.  Not the anxiety voice (aka the ego voice which my mentor Gabrielle Bernstein says “Speaks first and loudest”), but the second voice you hear, the heart voice, the one that’s speaking from your soul – the one you are usually too afraid to listen to.

“Whatever it is that you most admire in others and aspire to be is what you have in yourself, but have not yet cultivated.” Says Mastin Kipp of the Daily Love.

What are you waiting for?

Get Festive

It is time to get festive and I have some major spring fever (you might have guessed from my previous posts.)

This weekend is Cinco De Mayo, a favorite holiday of mine, a celebratory day in the Mexican heritage, and furthermore a really good reason for us to grab some margaritas and guacamole and dig in! Also my puppy will be 2 years old so I have some extra celebrating to do!

For me it feels like Cinco De Mayo is really the start of the summer celebrations we are about to embark on. It’s the first time since the winter months that we are really getting out there to celebrate in spring weather for us folks here in New York.

But it’s more than just that, this time of year means it’s occasion enough to get up and celebrate what you have goin’ on in your life!

Lets face it, we worked hard all winter, we sowed our oats and now is the time to get really grateful for everything in our lives.

Some of you may be like, what? My life and my options are totally sucking for me right now, but the truth of the matter is “In any given moment you can choose to see what’s right about a situation or what’s wrong about a situation, and either way you’re gonna find evidence to support what you’re looking for….. Not having the best situation, but seeing the best in your situation is the key to happiness.”– Marie Forleo.

If your not feelin’ in the festive mood – go down your gratitude list and really feel grateful for every SINGLE thing you have from your bed sheets, the roof over your head, your six senses (I like to count intuition as the sixth – not the scary ghost stuff), the fact that hopefully everything is functioning right in your body, for your clothes, your internet, EVERYTHING and literally thank God or the Universe for everything you have, every single night!  This will make you super happy on the inside and it will radiate to the outside!

The more comfortable you get with being happy and experiencing gratitude for the little things and the things we take for granted, the bigger your heart threshold can grow.  What is your heart threshold you may ask? It is the amount of happiness you are comfortable with accepting and once you pass that threshold we sometimes start to self -sabotage.  (Read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, so many great points I will be quoting him for months!)

The more happiness you are comfortable accepting, means the more success, love and abundance that will come to you.

Finding reason to celebrate exactly where you are, right now, no matter what the circumstance is absolutely reason to Get Festive!!!

Now go on, get grateful and enjoy life!

How to Stay Motivated

So you’ve started your goal with tons of enthusiasm, but a few weeks in you loose the momentum, life gets busy, and sometimes you just aren’t motivated.

Some times you want to just relax, get that extra sleep, cave in and do something totally indulgent.  Eat those cheat foods, skip your workout,

Avoid, avoid, avoid.

It’s true that objects in motion stay in motion.  The hardest part is when you are trying to get that ball rollin’ from the beginning – or all over again in the middle of your great progress.

Yes sometimes we all fall off the saddle but its important to get right back on and keep the momentum going.

Here’s how to get and stay motivated to accomplish ANYTHING!

1) Start Small. Doing something for just 2 minutes to get back in gear is one of the best ways to keep something going. The key to finishing a long term goal like getting fit, writing a book or just staying organized is to create space for the routine. As long as you get your sneakers on and close the door behind you, your body will most likely naturally get to the gym. If you start with just 2 minutes of organizing you will probably end up spending 20 minutes doing so and you’ll be incredibly proud of yourself in the end.

2) Create public reinforcement. By announcing your goal to friends and family or blasting it all over social media you are holding yourself accountable, and so will the people you tell.  Most people would rather not disappoint others or look bad in public. By doing this you are not only going to disappoint yourself but you will disappoint your community if you give up on your goal. This can be a strong motivational force for sticking with it.

3) Make it enjoyable. Lets face it, if it’s not enjoyable why would you want to do it? You will most likely make up any excuse in the books just to avoid what you “have to / need to” do to accomplish your goal.  If you don’t get great pleasure out of the process or at least the end goal – you probably wont stick with the plan.  If you hate going to the gym, find a fitness routine that is fun and make a pinterest board of Hot Bod’s that you will one day aspire to have.  Each time you hit one of your small fitness goals, reward yourself with a little treat (not food though as that would be counter productive).

This brings me to my other points:

4) Chart your progress & Reward yourself often.  Separate your main goal into small manageable micro-goals. If you want to work out, celebrate when you hit your first whole week of workouts with out skipping a day. If you want to get organized, break it out into one desk draw per day. Chart your progress with an X on the ol’ Cali (aka calendar), create an excel sheet or a daily blog. When you reward yourself, make sure its not something counter productive like a day off from the gym if your goal is to work out or a day to sleep in if your goal is to wake up earlier.

5) Visualize it. Like I said in my previous blogs, visualizing and dreaming about your end goal will light the fire in your pants to do things necessary to complete your goal. This alone will inspire you, how good you’ll look in that bikini, how proud you’ll feel when you write that book or how beautiful your home and cabinets will be when you are organized.

6) Never skip two days in a row. If you are trying to create a routine, we are all human so we may skip a day here and there – however having a goal of never skipping two days in a row will keep you on track. It’s so much harder to get back into a routine than to pick it up after just one day off.  Make this your goal and make sure you have a back up plan for sick days. If you are under the weather, maybe do some weights or stretching at home for 15 minutes. This still counts as working out and it will help you stay on track. No excuses!

How to maintain energy and focus if you loose it along the way.

1) Look it up, read about it and google it. Reading inspiring stories of how other people accomplished their goals will reignite your passion to finish yours!  Seeing others do what you dream of doing is a sure fire way to remind yourself that it IS possible, it HAS been done and you CAN do it too!

2) Think about the benefits. And remind yourself of why you started this goal in the first place. If you no longer think these reasons take priority any more or feel there are more pressing issues at hand, dig for more reasons. Although life does come between our goals sometimes, you will always be more proud of yourself if you simply didn’t give up, even when things got tough.  Most likely your goal is geared towards living the optimal life you dream of.  If stress or family matters take precedence at first glance – it may be more of a time than ever to stick with your goal. It will give you some much needed “me time” and help manage stress from other things that may be on your mind.

A little tip I just was reminded of:

We are all made of atoms that are literally vibrating as long as we are alive. The feelings that we feel and the energy we feel around accomplishing something should not be labeled “good” or “Bad” but simply how we are feeling and if we are feeling like Blah, tired, lazy, bored, nervous or unmotivated (or the reverse of any of these) we should examine WHY we are feeling that way and change the experience we are having.  Just realizing that we are going to vibrate from now until the day we die with either “good” or “bad” feelings doesn’t change the fact that those feelings and vibrations in our bodies will still be there. Channel that energy into your goals and you will be amazed at how it can propel you! – Thanks to Marieforleo.com and this video here for this tidbit on vibrating!

So we survived the end of the world!

2013 Illustrated CalendarSo the world DIDN’T end when the Mayans predicted on 12.21.12. and we survived the holidays!

Phew.

Whatever you celebrated and whether your Preppin’ skills have left you with tons of extra supplies that you didn’t end up needing (yet?!?), don’t you think its time to stop and appreciate the moment?

With all the crazy things that are happening in our world from Hurricane Sandy to the horrific tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary school, you must have noticed things are getting a little strange.

Is the world actually coming to an end, or are we experiencing the birth of a new world and a new era?

The way I see it, things sometimes have to hit rock bottom before they can get better.

With the state of the economy, the looming possibility of the United States catapulting over the fiscal cliff and the even more scary possibility of the modern-marvel-and-once-benign 3D Printer printing plastic guns that would go undetected in our sea of metal detectors; this world has got some changing to do.

And maybe that’s exactly what it is doing.  The Mayans may have predicted global warming and some other pretty outrageous occurrences but nothing stands out to us more like the possible “End of The World”. Maybe it didn’t happen on 12.21.12. but eventually there has to be an end of the world. Right?

Marie Forleo of MarieForleo.com and Ophi Edut, expert astrologer for Elle.com and cofounder of AstroStyle.com, explained it rather chicly.  Their video explains the theory of us moving from a 3 dimensional world; one that we experience with our 5 senses, into a 4 dimensional world; one in which our smartest business asset is our intuition.  Watch the video here to see what I mean!

I think this is pretty cool as my intuition is a huge part of any of the successes I have had in my life and it is the key to finding your own happiness and creating the life you want to live.

They speak about deepening your spiritual practice as a business tool and realizing that there are more forces at play then you may have originally been aware of. Trust me; check out this video to see what I’m talking about!

With that said, here are my 5 steps to surviving the world after the end of the Mayan calendar.

1) Stop and smell the roses. If the world is really going to end, start really LIVING it!

2) Ask yourself WWJD – What Would Jobs Do? Steve Jobs that is. He famously said “When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” ~Steve Jobs, 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech.  So if today were the last day of your life, how would you want to spend it?  Do that!  WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?!?!?!

 3)  Follow these words of wisdom from Jobs “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”  Steve Jobs. Ah, I love that quote! So true!

4)  Get a 2013 calendar. You will need it because the world is NOT coming to an end, but the world as we know it is and you need some inspiration along the way.  In that case, check out my new Illustrated calendar here, specifically created to inspire you every month.

5) Plan your bucket list: your list of things to accomplish before you die! Set some goals and live an inspired life!  Set the track for how your life will go and what you will do in this flash of a pan we all have. As Marie Forleo says in the video above, “Move from Waiting to Creating”.  Don’t wait for success to find you, for prince charming to show up at your door, or for that dream opportunity bump into you as you to cross the street! Create your life the way YOU want it, and that way, if today were your last day here on Earth you can go out having lived it well!

What I know about life…

No matter how old we are or how young, there is nothing more powerful than our own mind, and our own power of creation.

When you express yourself your power grows. The more you let yourself feel it and practice it, the more mastery of it you obtain. Use it or loose it.

Ask yourself “What is it that you really want???… Do it. There is no way to convince anyone of your greatness. You have to know it on the inside and DO IT… Knife fight your way to your dream.” – Lady Gaga, The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet.

Try harder, try a different way.  What are the stories you are telling yourself about why you can’t or are afraid to move forward.  What journey of a thousand miles are you creating in your head that can only be taken one step at a time?

Try until you make it.  Don’t stop when it stops being easy.  Take your power back, schedule time to work on it, to take your one step each day. Work through it when you are not in the mood, push on and you will get in the mood.

Be gentle with yourself, Rome was not built in one day, or month – or year.

We are on a lifetime JOURNEY to learn what we are meant to learn. Lessons will keep coming up until you understand them.  Things happen to slow you down, so you can actually slow down and think!!!!! To maybe gain a fresh perspective or a big picture view, we can only see this from the slow lane.  Once we know where we are going we can speed up again.

Believe in miracles, there are forces around you that you cannot see or hear. If you tune in to your intuition you will notice them. Pay attention. You are being guided and there is some kind of force greater than you, even if you can’t see that yet or don’t know what it is.

Remember when you were younger, what did you believe then?  Did you think you can conquer the world?  You can, you just have to scuff off all the grime you have heard by people who don’t listen to their intuition or worse yet listen, but don’t do what it says.  Maybe you have become one of those people.  Unlearn it. Go back to your true self.  Stop making yourself sick. You are in this lifetime to get it right, to find happiness.

Don’t listen to anyone’s advice but your own for a while, your inner voice – it is your inborn compass to decipher what works for you and what YOU should be doing as opposed to what others tell you that you should be doing.

Go inward. Stop. Take inventory of what you want, what kind of impact do you want to have on the world. Course correct. Where are you NOT on this path? What gives you stress? How can you remove what you don’t like and add what you do like? How can you see it differently?

Celebrate life.  I have had a major breakthrough by slowing down when I got sick and by seeing things differently.  How can you do the same?  Ask yourself – What do you need in this life to be fulfilled and what no longer works for you?

I recently opened my inbox to find Marie Forleo’s latest email titled

How to Overcome your fear of Success, and with it – a vlog:

This had my name written A.L.L. over it.  For those of you who know me, you probably don’t think I have a fear of success. Well in all actuality I do, and it is probably my greatest fear – along with my fear of failure.  Double edged sword much? Damned if you do Damned if you don’t? Yeah – that’s a stressful sandwich to be in.  Walking the path of my spiritual journey this is a predicament I have been itching to put to rest.

Through Marie’s vlog I was introduced to her interviewee; Dr. Cathy Collautt, and it seems she or this, is what I have been searching for!

A way to finally reprogram your subconscious and get it to play on your team, no matter what your fear.

She also writes a really compelling blog, as she is a proclaimed Metaphysician and Manifesting coach – Manifesting coach – where have you been all my life!

In her blog  she made a really interesting point, on Dissatisfaction, and the gap between taste and ambition.  She says that Dissatisfaction is the recognition of this gap, the space between what we desire and the current “fruits of our labor”.  Maybe you are working so hard, yet you are not where you would like to be. She says “You are disappointed because of your taste, and your taste gives away your potential, i.e. the possibility that presently exists of what you might in time become. . . You weren’t an idiot for thinking you could, you were simply aware of your potential. . . Your recognition of the gap between what you want to produce and what you actually produced itself means there is more to you than that.”

I think sometimes it’s really good to hear that you or I am not crazy, when other people perhaps think it’s good enough.
The only way to truly be satisfied is when your taste matches your ambition, and the work you put out.   It’s a process – a process of doing and doing and in time eventually getting there.

There is nothing wrong with keeping your sites on the stars when you, in other people’s opinions have already been to the moon. It’s about self-discipline and commitment, something that should not be taken lightly.

This intertwines very well with the idea of training your subconscious mind to over come your fears, and to never let them block you again. You can see the steps in Marie’s video but to sum it up:

You must listen to your subconscious mind, and understand that what it is telling you about (in this circumstance) why you are afraid to succeed, and these are your non-negotiables.

I never thought about it that way.

So if you are afraid of being super successful because you fear you will loose your freedom and have no time for yourself or no time to be truly creative – Or you think you will loose time with family and friends and therefore lead to them resenting you, or maybe being jealous of your success if they are not moving at the same pace that you are – Then your non-negotiables are keeping your freedom, and keeping tight relationships with family and friends.

This is part of why I am afraid of real, uber success, I never want to loose those things. For you, your reasons may be different.

I felt really good about knowing that instead of me being afraid to loose these things, these are things that I held really dear and sacred.  Dr. Collautt goes on to say, figure out exactly what this means to you and make a commitment to yourself to continue to hold those things sacred, and to not go in the direction of loosing these things along the way, under any circumstances.

Success can be what feels good to you, and on your terms.  My definition of success, and I think even our generations’ vision of it has changed drastically in the past 10 years.  Growing up we thought it was sitting at a big desk in a shoulder padded suit, choosing between a career and family, not coming home for dinner and being so lonely in your expensive clothes and briefcase.  Today for us it has changed, we have seen so many entrepreneurs do it their way, on their terms and fit in the most important things in their life.  I think its really cool knowing, and I mean REALLY KNOWING that we have the power to create our reality and create the life we want to live. Now, even more than ever.

Happy One Year of Blogging to ME!!! And other New Years Resolutions!

Wow, I can not believe that 2010’s, AND 2011’s New Year’s resolution of starting a blog was brought to fruition. And none the less, has been going strong for ONE WHOLE year now! Pretty amazing and pretty proud of myself!

This year I have thought extra carefully about my 2012 New Year’s resolutions and I have taken to some even more goal-minded ways of planning them out for success!

#1:

These really helped me so far just to feel like I have my 2012 goals planned out in a really attainable way. Also, Marie is awesome so it’s worth checking out her site!

#2:
If you are an entrepreneur or some kind of creative out there, like many of us – sometimes you need a little redirection. One of my 2011 investments was into myself and my business. I am proud to say I am a Danielle LaPorte / Spark Kit groupie and It has totally changed my life. It is a working booklet of how to rediscover the path you have chosen, your passion, how to capitalize on it and what you really need to get the success party goin’! I am still using this Spark Kit as a guideline for life and refer to it often! Check it out on the side of this post on the right hand column and feel free to ask me more questions about it!

#3:
Meditate on any decisions you must make that you don’t know the answer to. Sitting in the calm will allow your gut instinct voice or inner guide to come through and let you make a decision based on love instead of fear. Use this to guide any paths you must take.
